PASCV AWARDS

Ed Nowakowski Senior Memorial Clinical Virology Award
Sponsored by Bion Enterprises, Ltd.

The Clinical Virology Award acknowledges an individual whose contributions to clinical virology have had a major impact on the epidemiology, treatment or understanding of the pathogenesis of viral diseases.

The Clinical Virology Award was established in 1993 and has been sponsored each year since then by Bion Enterprises. The award consists of a prize of $1000 and a plaque. The presentation is made at the Annual Clinical Virology Symposium in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Nominations should be submitted to the current PASCV president, along with a brief statement of the nominee's accomplishments in clinical virology, or a curriculum vitae.

Diagnostic Virology Award
Sponsored by BD Diagnostics

The Diagnostic Virology Award acknowledges an individual whose contributions to viral diagnosis have had a major impact on the discipline.

The Diagnostic Virology Award was established in 1985 and since 1997, has been sponsored by BD Diagnostics . The award consists of a prize of $1000 and a plaque. The presentation is made at the Annual Clinical Virology Symposium in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Nominations should be submitted to the current PASCV president, along with a brief statement of the nominee's accomplishments in diagnostic virology, or a curriculum vitae.

Young Investigator Award
Sponsored by Remel, Inc.

This award is offered to a young investigator who holds a doctoral degree and is under the age of 40 or less than 10 years from completion of the doctoral degree. This award recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution to the field of clinical or diagnostic virology (either a single paper or a body of research) in the early years of his/her career. The nominee must be a member of the Pan American Society of Clinical Virology and is eligible to win this award only once. The award carries with it a prize of $1,000 and a plaque and will be presented at the Annual Clinical Virology Symposium in Daytona. The awardee will be asked to make a short 15 presentation during the symposium.

Travel Awards

The Society provides several $750 travel grants to selected students, postdoctoral fellows, and technologists in North America, who submit abstracts to the annual Clinical Virology Symposium. In addition, two $1,000 travel grants are sponsored by Diagnostic Hybrids in honor of Drs. Edwin Lennette and Edith Hsiung.

Due to increased travel costs, $1500 travel grants are awarded to winners who are Latin American residents. One of these is a special award given in memory of Dr. Mario Escobar.

Applicants from other areas of the world may be considered if the request is need-based, and if money is available.

To be eligible, the applicant must be the presenter of a poster, at any level other than faculty. Preference will be given to individuals who have not previously been selected. Winners are not eligible to re-apply for a minimum of 3 years.

Applicants should submit:

  • A completed Travel Award Application Form in English or Spanish
  • A supporting letter from your supervisor/ department head
  • A copy of your abstract

These materials should be sent to Dr. Steven Specter, Symposium Chairman, via email to sspecter@hsc.usf.edu or by mail (send two copies) to MDC04, University of South Florida College of Medicine, 12901 Bruce B. Downs Blvd., Tampa, FL 33612.

Abstracts will be reviewed and winners selected by a committee consisting of Dr. Specter and PASCV Officers.
